Protecting the Ocean Through Photography
The ocean and coral reefs are important parts of our natural environment. When photographing corals, I have come to understand that they need clean seawater to survive. Once corals turn white (bleach), they can never recover. This is why my coral photography focuses on raising awareness about marine conservation. Through these images, I hope to remind people to cherish and protect our natural resources.
When you hang these photos on your wall and ire their beauty, you are also showing that you care about protecting nature.
Taiwan’s small islands have a rich and diverse marine ecosystem, where corals form beautiful shapes over time. Through my black-and-white photography, I capture their timeless beauty with a nostalgic, vintage style. The play of light and shadow—like a charcoal drawing—adds depth and movement, making each image a unique piece of art.

This black and white series explores the Dahlia flower as a natural mandala — a sacred geometry found not in temples, but in gardens.
Rather than chasing high-definition realism, I choose to emphasize imperfection, grain, and texture. These photographs are intentionally sculpted to resemble charcoal sketches or weathered memories, inviting a sense of timelessness. In stripping away color, the Dahlia's structure becomes more pronounced — a hypnotic arrangement of petals that form concentric, almost sacred patterns.
Each bloom is a quiet architecture of meditation. In its radial symmetry lies a visual mantra, echoing the meditative qualities of mandalas used in spiritual traditions across cultures. This geometry is not merely beautiful — it gently anchors the mind. It asks us to pause, reflect, and observe.
Through this lens, the Dahlia becomes more than a flower — it becomes a portal to stillness. Its repeating forms create a subtle gravitational pull, holding the viewer’s gaze in a silent, visual rhythm. It is an object that seems to breathe on the wall, softly encouraging contemplation.

In my "Space Rose" series, I explore the idea of a rose coming to life in space. What would it become in such an environment? This question led me to create an abstract expression of the rose, capturing its essence through swirling shapes and vibrant colors. I enjoy using quick brushstrokes to convey the movement and energy of the rose as it seems to float and thrive without the constraints of gravity.
"Space Rose" offers a glimpse into a world where we, too, might one day exist—where there’s no gravity, endless pressure, and everything is in constant motion, free to evolve and transform in a boundless universe.

Sanzhi Chieh is a painter and photographer whose work is a profound exploration of nature and positive energy. Since childhood, Sanzhi has been immersed in the art world, having begun painting at the age of eight. Her studies in Western art, conducted through a private high school, laid the foundation for a career marked by a commitment to artistic expression and emotional well-being.
Sanzhi’s art is infused with the philosophy of healing through art. Before each creation, she devotes herself to meditation, seeking to soothe her mind and channel positive energies into her works. Her paintings, primarily done in oil and acrylic, focus on nature and its manifestations, translating the nurturing love of the Earth through abstract compositions and clean lines. The color palettes she chooses are carefully selected for their psychological healing properties, aiming to evoke joy and relaxation in viewers.
Sanzhi also incorporates ritual practices into her creative process. While painting and drying, she often burns agarwood or copal, allowing the canvas to absorb their high energy. This approach adds a positive dimension to the art, influencing the feng shui arrangement of interior spaces. Her contemporary style, predominantly abstract, combines artistic creativity with therapeutic functionality, fostering a deep interaction with the audience.
Sanzhi Chieh's artistic journey is rich and diverse. Between 1984 and 1998, she underwent intensive training in Western art in Taiwan, excelling in competitions and exhibitions, where she received several awards for her works in watercolor, charcoal drawing, oil painting, and sculpture. She was inspired by great masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Zhang Daqian, and Claude Monet, and continued her artistic research through a photographic trip to Los Angeles, where she was influenced by the city's vibrant art scene.
Since 2023, Sanzhi has been dedicated to expanding his abstract style, exploring semi-abstract, abstract expressionism, and gestural abstraction. His contemporary inspirations include Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Helen Frankenthaler, Jay DeFeo, and Nicolas de Staël.
