An empty bridge… a walk at sunset... when suddenly the setting sun turns the clouds "a blood red" as if an "infinite scream ing through nature” has occurred.
But is the unnaturally orange sky simply the effect of nature, like a volcanic eruption? Or does there lurk some deeper psychological presence, symbolising the anxiety of the human condition?
It has been asked of this painting: “Could only have been painted by a man”. At some time in our lives, when we scream silently in despair, are we not Crossing the Bridge?
