Luís Soares was born on August 22, 1952, in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique. Growing up as a descendant of settlers, he was deeply influenced by the rich cultural tapestry of Mozambique, characterized by a blend of white, black, and Asian communities. These early experiences profoundly shaped his artistic vision.

In 1974, Soares began his career by executing mural commissions for private homes, marking the start of his journey as a professional artist. That year, he held his first major exhibition at Casa Amarela, ed by the Ayuntamiento de Lourenço Marques, and also exhibited at the Centro Cultural de la Beira with the backing of the periodical Noticias de la Beira and the General Directorate of Tourism. During this time, he began creating cast sculptures in bronze and aluminum.

In 1977, Soares moved to Lisbon, where he ed GRAVURA – Sociedade Portuguesa de Engravers Portugueses. Here, he was introduced to various engraving techniques, including lithography and screen printing, while receiving a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for engraving. He studied under the guidance of artist João Hogan.
