Sofiane Zouggar (b. 1982), based in , is a multimedia artist who graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Algiers. His work emerges from complex research processes, often involving close collaboration with both public and private archive collections. Over the years, Zouggar has developed projects that typically span across extended periods, utilizing a range of mediums including photography, video, and drawing. His multidisciplinary approach allows him to explore themes related to collective memory, offering nuanced narratives shaped by both research and artistic expression.
Zouggar has participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Dak’Art 2012 Biennale in Dakar, Senegal; the World Event Young Artists in Nottingham, UK; Picturie Générale in Algiers, Algeria; and "The MoMRtA" (The Museum Of Manufactured Response To Absence) at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMA) in Algiers. He also showcased his work at the Algerian Pavilion during the Dak’Art 2014 Biennale in Dakar, Senegal, and at the Festival National de la Photographie d’Art (FESPA) in Algiers. Additionally, his art has been featured in the Qalandiya International Biennial in Ramallah, Palestine, and the Pan-African video art festival Boda Boda Lounge in Algiers.
In June 2017, Zouggar’s work was displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig as part of "Chinafrika, under-construction." He was also part of the March Project exhibition commissioned by the Sharjah Foundation in October 2017. In February 2018, he held the "Rasm" exhibition at MAMA in Algiers. His work was further showcased in 2019 at The Wallach Art Gallery/Columbia University in New York, in the exhibition "Waiting for Omar Gatlato: A Survey of Algerian Contemporary Art."
