Karin Vermeer is a contemporary Dutch artist who has been living and working in Rotterdam since 2002. Born in Tilburg in 1970, she initially pursued fashion studies before enrolling at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam, where she earned her degree in illustration in 1994. After working as a freelance illustrator and decorator for several years, Vermeer transitioned into creating her own independent artworks, focusing on paintings and murals.
Her lifelong fascination with fashion and female portraits stems from her early years spent browsing fashion magazines. This interest evolved into a critical view of the manipulated images of models, which inspired her unique artistic approach—digitally and manually combining photographs. Vermeer specializes in creating portraits by blending multiple images of different individuals to form entirely new, non-existent faces. She also photographs models in her studio and incorporates these images with textures like old walls and grunge posters.
Her process begins with digital manipulation, followed by printing and layering thick structures of paint and gel, adding a tangible quality to her digital creations. For Vermeer, art is a sensory experience, not bound by explanation or concept. Each piece emerges organically as she explores and mixes images that capture her attention.
