We spent a good deal of time with them, watching the calf’s antics, keenly exploring its surrounds and steadily moving further and further away from its mother. Our guide told us to be prepared for when the calf would return to its mother, as that usually results in something memorable to photograph. The calf returned but what transpired was beyond what we expected. At the very moment of the reunion, three ox-peckers took off, almost like singing ‘Hallelujah!’ at the reunion.
While photographing this scene, we positioned ourselves in a way that we were fairly low down compared to the giraffes, enabling a nice low angle which always enhances this kind of shot because it keeps the horizon line low in the frame. We chose to crop the image vertically to accentuate the vertical lines of the mother giraffe, while keeping in mind a visual balance between the band of cloud and the band of grass. In processing and choice of paper, we aimed for a softer and mildly contrasting fine-art feel, to capture the dreamy, wind-blown and optimistic feel of the moment.

We are Preeti and Prashant Chacko, photo artists with a specific interest in showcasing animals in the wild, in black and white. Our work celebrates nature through the beauty of its wild beasts, photographed in timeless monochrome, to create a vision of a time past but hopefully never finished. In nature there is a still, ethereal quality that comes and goes in a blink of an eye and we try to capture those moments for eternity. In our images we strive to portray our love and respect for the subjects we photograph and the thrill of seeing them in their natural environment . Our photos are printed on fine art archival paper.
The key driving force behind our desire to create more work as well as to sell our prints, is to give back to the wild spaces and the communities that make our ion possible. 12.5% of the sale value of every single print that we sell will go towards ing a trustworthy conservation agency that is doing stellar work in preserving our wild spaces and animals across the world, as well as to the safari guide who enabled us to make the photograph.
