Roger Quesnel f4q3e

Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario, Canada
Artist (Painting)
Born 1961
I aim to capture the spirit of a scene with a focus on atmosphere. It’s not about painting pretty scenes, but rather re-connecting my viewer to a memory or feeling. To momentarily transport them.

Roger, born in 1961 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, currently resides in the Township of Whitchurch-Stouffville, near Toronto. He has been painting for over 45 years, earning numerous awards and features through Fine Art America, with his works held in private collections across Canada. Roger received formal art training in high school and studied Fine Arts/Visual Arts at York University in Toronto from 1980-82.

Roger's emotive and atmospheric contemporary cloudscape and landscape paintings aim to connect viewers to deep emotions, forgotten memories, and places that touch their souls. He focuses on creating mystery, capturing the feeling, mood, emotion, or spirit of the scene, rather than merely producing "pretty paintings." His contemporary style exhibits classical training with influences of impressionism, expressionism, tonalism, and minimalism, often bordering on semi-abstraction.

Roger's refined and gentle color palette soothes viewers with subtle tones and shades. He prefers using large brushes in a loose-brush technique, deliberately avoiding too much detail to allow viewers to engage with the painting through their imagination and perceptions. His goal is to evoke an emotional response by capturing the overall mood or emotion of the scene through light, tone, and color.

Using both acrylics and oils, Roger's primary medium is painting. All of his works are original and hand-painted, typically done alla prima, applying real paint to canvas. His creations possess a freshness and unique quality, as they are intuitively created from his imagination, stored memories, and emotions. He works in both large and medium canvas sizes, avoiding AI, digital mixed media, or computer art software.

Roger's hope for viewers of his work is to evoke a sense of peace, joy, or nostalgic familiarity that speaks to their souls, leaving them in a happy state of mind. He aims to assist viewers in their ongoing search for that elusive spiritual homeland within.
