This artwork depicts the intricate ceiling decoration above the staircase leading to the Muayede Hall in Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul. The composition is inspired by the rich ornamental tradition of Ottoman architecture and reflects the grandeur of 19th-century design.

The piece was created using a combination of acrylic, gouache, and watercolor. To highlight the shimmering details of the original ceiling, genuine gold leaf was applied to selected areas, adding depth and a sense of authenticity to the work.

The creative process involved detailed research of the palace’s interior, followed by a careful sketching phase to ensure accuracy and symmetry. I aimed to reflect not only the visual beauty of the architectural element but also its cultural and historical significance.

Fun fact: Dolmabahçe Palace was one of the first buildings in the Ottoman Empire to incorporate Western styles into traditional architecture. The Muayede Hall is one of its most magnificent spaces, and its ceiling decorations symbolize the Empire’s openness to blending artistic influences. This piece is a tribute to that unique synthesis.

Sabriye Şeker is a Turkish artist born in 1960, known for her work in Tezhip (illumination) and Miniature painting.

Her artistic journey began in 1987 when she ed the courses of Prof. A. Süheyl Ünver at the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Department of Deontology. She later received training from renowned masters such as Cahide Keskiner, Semih İrteş, and Mamure Öz. She also studied Tezhip at Sema Nakkaşhanesi and took miniature lessons from Nilgün Gencer.

Şeker is recognized for her contemporary interpretations of traditional miniature art. She has represented Turkey on international platforms, exhibiting her work in cities like Hong Kong, London, New York, and Italy.

Since 2002, she has continued her work at her own studio, Şeker Sanatevi, where she both creates her art and teaches students. Her works are featured in various collections and books, and she continues to teach illumination art.
