“TALK TO THE WALL AND THE DOOR MAY LISTEN” is a slightly surreal melancholic urban landscape artwork in which a girl stands on her scooter in a dark corner. Surrounded by shadows of branches that seem to hold her captive and evoke a sense of mystery.

The girl symbolizes youthful vulnerability but also resilience. The interaction between light and dark, sharp and blurred, evokes the atmosphere of a dreamy past, like an old photograph whose colors are beginning to fade.

The image says more than appears at first glance. It tells of a child's silence, of the things that remain unspoken, but which it is hoped someone will hear anyway.

The painting deals with the themes of childhood, memories and overcoming fears. It tells of the inner child whispering in silence, hoping that someone - or something - is listening.

I created the work in my typical layered mixed media style.
Combining Collage elements and painting techniques that flow together in a weathered, worn image reminiscent of old photographs of the past.

db Waterman is a contemporary Dutch artist. In her works she assembles original photography, assorted papers, acrylics, oil, charcoal, ink, and pencil. The variety of resources she is able to use has proved indispensable to her. The biggest challenge the collage medium posed was its unforgiving lack of transparency. Finding a way to replicate the effects of transparency afforded by paint, especially watercolors, was a large victory for the artist. The preparing labor shows through in her collages; layer upon layer of material remains visible in the finished pieces.

db Waterman believes that the body of her work is characterized by her skill for reinvention. Having always loved the appearance of weathered walls plastered with peeling paint and old posters, she revived this aesthetic with hopefully a keen and professional eye. The creative objective of her work is to “make something beautiful out of dilapidation.” Her tableaus explore the dissonance between old and new materials, intertwined in the most beautiful way possible to create dreamlike and melancholy images.
