Para além de poeta, foi dramaturgo, ensaísta, tradutor, publicitário, crítico literário, empresário, comentador político. Poeta lírico e nacionalista cultivou uma poesia voltada aos temas tradicionais de Portugal e ao seu lirismo saudosista, que expressa reflexões sobre seu “eu profundo”, suas inquietações, sua solidão e seu tédio.
Fernando Pessoa criou heterónimos - o que motivou o título desta pintura, cujo verso faz parte dum poema que tem exactamente o mesmo título, «Não sei quantas almas tenho. Fernando Pessoa era vários poetas ao mesmo tempo com personalidades próprias que escreveram a sua poesia e com estes heterónimos procurou detectar, sob vários ângulos, os dramas do homem de seu tempo.

*Note: Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) was one of the most important poets in the Portuguese language and a central figure of Portuguese Modernism. In addition to being a poet, he was a playwright, essayist, translator, publicist, literary critic, businessman and political commentator. Lyrical and nationalist poet cultivated poetry focused on traditional Portuguese themes and his nostalgic lyricism, which expresses reflections on his “deep self”, his concerns, his loneliness and his boredom.
Fernando Pessoa created heteronyms - which motivated the title of this painting, whose verse is part of a poem that has exactly the same title, «I don't know how many souls I have». Fernando Pessoa there were several poets at the same time with their own personalities who wrote their poetry and with these heteronyms he sought to detect, from different angles, the dramas of the man of his time.
