Originaire de Biscaye, Guanès Etche-Garay dit 'GUAN', artiste autodidacte était peintre, sculpteur, graveur, chasseur et cueilleur de tout matériaux dit 'mort' afin de leur redonner vie. Sa mère, Yvette Etche-Garay , artiste belge, peintre lisière et graveur lui transmet les bases de techniques picturales.
Voyageur et musicien, il accompagna de son Washbord le groupe New Orléans Papa Stompers jusqu'en 1992
.Il travailla activement dans les années 80 au sein du mouvement 'Art Cloche' à Paris et durant 9 ans dans son atelier 'Aux Douches' rue Boyer de Ménilmontant. En relation constante avec son amie artiste peintre, chanteuse et écrivain de la musique, Éliane Printemps qui l'accompagna dans la peinture, il fut fort impressionné par le sculpteur Jiri Kovanic avec qui il partageait l'atelier des douches..
Depuis sa rencontre avec Chomo, Guanès récupère, recycle, recrache. Marie le collé, le cousu, le kraft, le bois mort, la pierre, la ferraille, le carton, résine sacs poubelle et fils électriques.
En 1995,après son arrivée au Pays basques , la sculpture monopolisa les activités de 'Guan' et la sculptrice Christiane Giraud l'alimenta amicalement de ses conseils .
En 2000, 'Guan' acheta une ancienne ferme templière en ruine nommée Ospitalia a Amorots Succos pour y poser sa famille et ses ateliers. Pour soutenir la réhabilitation du lieu, l'artiste et sa famille, l'association initiée par l' amie peintre Colette Dubuc , présidée par René Pithon et baptisée Harriarka par le conteur et ami Koldo Amestoy vit le jour en avril 2003 .. Son ami peintre Christian Saint Marc fut le dernier président d' Harriarka.
Éduquer le regard, voir la beauté qui nous entoure malgré tout, découvrir 'l'Art Pauvre', c'est cela même que Guanès fit partager durant sept années d'interventions et résidences au sein des écoles maternelles et primaire du Pays basques.
Guanès Etche-Garay est décédé le 9 mai 2013 a Lavaur (Tarn).
