Hart und spröde, gleichzeitig von der Natur in Weichheit geformt, ist das Ausgangsmaterial Feuerstein, dass der Künstler Jan Witte-Kropius für sich entdeckt hat.
Feuerstein (flintstone, pierre à fusil) ist ein Kieselgestein, dessen Entstehung ein Rätsel, d.h. nach wie vor nicht vollständig geklärt ist. Relikte von Kieselschwämmen und Kieselalgen im Feuerstein verweisen jedoch auf einen organischen Ursprung.
Seine enorme Härte und Neigung zum Splittern, ähnlich der von Glas, stellt eine besondere Herausforderung in der Bearbeitung dar. Aus diesem Grunde sind, im Gegensatz zu anderen mehr oder weniger harten Gesteinsarten, Skulpturen aus Feuerstein mehr als selten und in der Art wie der Künstler Jan Witte-Kropius sie fertigt wohl einmalig.
