The artist skillfully distorts space and time using elements within the painting. The moon in the upper right corner and the sun in the lower left symbolize the age of time, while the eight horses form an arc, resembling different moments when a single horse is leaping, giving the impression that the celestial horses effortlessly leap across the constraints of time. The dark background adds depth and infinite visual experiences, particularly noticeable in dim dawns or dusks.
The celestial horses in the painting are all rendered using traditional Chinese mineral pigments, including various shades of cinnabar, ochre, stone yellow, and clamshell powder. The design and painting process of the entire artwork took about 40 days.

Since the late 1960s, Liu Junqi has been studying painting and wall mural copying in Dunhuang. After spending 10 years studying and working at the Mogao Caves, he was itted to the Fine Arts Department of Northwest Normal University. Upon graduation, he ed the Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes Art Research Institute.
Over the next 30 years, he participated in and led the copying and preservation work of the Buddhist mural paintings in the Maijishan Grottoes, earning international acclaim for these murals.
Liu Junqi is known for his works featuring a variety of mural copying styles and unique large-scale expressive ink paintings of horses. These works not only integrate the characteristics of Chinese grotto murals but also embody the essence of traditional Chinese painting.
