It was the time when Sri Ram, along with brother Lakshman and Guru Vishwamitra were going to witness the powerful and divine Shiv Dhanush at Devi Sita’s swayamvar in Mithila. In their path, they came across a huge stone laying near a barren hut. Guru Vishvamitra says, this huge stone is Devi Ahilya, wife of Rishi Gautam, cursed by his husband, waiting many years to be liberated when Lord Vishnu will come in his Ram avatar, his touch will make Ahilya regain her consciousness and femininity. Listening to this, Sri Ram went near the stone and touched with his feet. Upon doing so, the huge stone returned to her true self and liberated.
