Despite the fact that the visual component of life has always been very important and has fascinated him since early childhood, Alexander Makropoulos approached the visual arts quite late. During his life, he immersed himself in various spheres of human activity, tried many professions and only at the age of 40 discovered sculpture, then graphics, and even later became interested in painting.
The works of Alexander Makropoulos can be attributed to "magic realism", although the artist himself characterizes his style as "existential impressionism". It seems that such a vague formulation was chosen in order to compile visual techniques, artistic methods and cultural codes in the work as freely as possible.
Being self-taught and without an academic background, Alexander Makropoulos focuses primarily on the sensory component in his creative quests, on the search for the shaky, elusive beauty contained in the fleeting images of the everyday world. Sometimes these are abstract textures snatched from the rough fabric of material reality, sometimes classical genre scenes or banal utensils placed at the whim of the creator in phantasmagoric circumstances. But one thing is invariable: each time something mysterious shimmers through the fabric of the artistic narrative. Or does it all just seem that way? As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, like everything else.
